Blepharoplasty, or “Eyelid Surgery” is a procedure to help improve the appearance of the eyes. Excess skin and fat around the eyes can cause problems. In some cases, the problem is such that the eyelids will hang on the lashes. For women, this can cause difficulty applying makeup to their eyelids and/or lashes. In extreme cases they can even block peripheral vision. When preformed by a skilled plastic surgeon such as Dr. Fairbanks, excess skin is removed from the eyelids, making the eyes more attractive and youthful.
Candidates for the Procedure
- Individuals with excess skin that covers the natural fold of the upper eyelids
- Some individuals are candidates for removing excess bulging fat around the eyes
- Eyelids that look aged and tired
- Puffy-appearing eyelids
- Lower eyelid grooves
- Without serious eye conditions
- Good physical health
- Positive outlook and realistic expectations
Details of procedure
The blepharoplasty is performed under local anesthesia and intravenous sedation or under general anesthesia. Care is taken to provide a safe procedure.
The surgery is designed to use the natural skin lines in the eyelid creases so the scarring is well hidden. The excess eyelid skin is removed. Occasionally some fat is removed. Fine sutures are used for the closure, which are removed at a later time. Every effort is made to minimize the degree of postoperative bruising and swelling.
Discomfort and swelling after Blepharoplasty are usually less than expected. The overall recovery of a Blepharoplasty depends on the individual patient’s health. Typically 5 to 7 days off from work for recovery is recommended. Strenuous activities, exercise and sports are discouraged for the first 6 weeks while the healing tissues have a chance to become stronger.
What can I expect?
When Dr. Fairbanks performs an eyelid surgery, the patient can look forward to enjoying a high degree of satisfaction. Patients recover quickly from this surgery. The scars are well-concealed in natural skin lines.
Will my results last?
Results are typically long–lasting. Eventually, with age, the brows may begin to droop. A second Blepharoplasty is usually not needed, however a Brow Lift may be taken into consideration. A lifestyle that is active and healthy will help to better maintain the results.
At Fairbanks Plastic Surgery, extensive experience and expertise is achieved in performing these procedures. Every care and consideration will be taken to maintain and sustain your health and well-being while providing you with optimal results from your cosmetic plastic surgery operation.
