About Breast Augmentation in Salt Lake City

Breast augmentation, commonly referred to as a “Boob Job”, is one of the most popular surgeries performed by plastic surgeons today. Our breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery that both enhances the size and appearance of the breasts of a woman who feels she is too small.

What Breast Augmentation Won’t Do

Our breast augmentation in will enlarge the size of the breast but will not lift the breast and elevate the position of the nipple. If the desire is to reposition the nipples and “put them back where they used to be,” then a Breast Lift or Mastopexy should be considered. Occasionally, an augmentation-lift will be performed at the same time. However, this increases the risks of the procedure and may not have the desired results. If both breast augmentation and breast lift are desired,  then you should discuss your options with your plastic surgeon.

Candidates for Breast Augmentation

  • Women who feel their breast size and/or appearance is too small
  • Women who have low self-esteem, especially about their intimacy
  • Women who consider their breasts, after pregnancy, are not as desirable
  • Good physical health
  • Positive outlook and realistic expectations

Women are often self-conscious about their breast size or appearance. For them, to be seen in a swimsuit is a “no way” experience. This can affect their self-esteem and all too often, their intimacy. Many women never develop a desired amount of breast tissue. For some, pregnancy may improve this dilemma for a short time. Then, there are those who feel they had what are to be considered “nice breasts” only to become disappointed after they are done nursing.

The majority of the women seeking breast augmentation in Salt Lake City fit into these categories, and are good candidates for the procedure. However, only an evaluation and discussion with your plastic surgeon will help you understand if you are a good candidate for a breast augmentation.

Options for Breast Augmentation

In the 21st century, there are multiple options for breast augmentation:

  • Silicone Breast Implant: The most common choice is the silicone breast implant. Silicone Implants give a relatively natural look and feel if the proportional size is chosen. The FDA approves silicone breast implants for augmentation in women age 22 or older.
  • Saline Breast Implant: The saline breast implant is still chosen by several women. Saline Implants also give a relatively natural look and feel if the proportional size is chosen.
  • Fat Grafting or Fat Transfer: Women like to joke about taking fat from their hips and thighs and putting it in their chests. Well, that can happen! Fat grafting for breast augmentation is growing in popularity. This option gives the most natural look and feel of the breast.

Details of the Breast Implant Augmentation Procedure

Breast implant placement has several approaches:

  •  A small single incision is usually made in the area of the lower breast crease, the inframammary fold. (The preferred approach)
  • An incision along the lower margin of the nipple and in the axilla (arm pit).

The implant may be placed directly under the breast tissue for those who already have an adequate amount of tissue to cover the implant. More commonly, the implant is placed under the pectoralis muscle.

The incision is closed with 3 layers of suture followed by a sterile dressing. A surgical bra is provided after every breast augmentation or boob job.

Recovery After Breast Implant Augmentation Procedure

  • At least one week off of work is recommended
  • Excessive motion is discouraged during healing process
  • Heavy lifting discouraged during healing process
  • Pain medication is given for discomfort

After implant surgery, everyone is worried about pain. Pain medication and muscle relaxers are given to make the discomfort tolerable. Excessive motion of the arms and heavy lifting are discouraged during the healing process. Minimal motion lets the tissue around the implants heal and keep them in proper position. At least one week off of work is encouraged. It is noted that many are back to work in just a couple of days. This depends on the patient, as some are more resilient than others. Either way, the end result includes larger and fuller breasts. More importantly, we find happy and satisfied patients.

Safety of Silicone Breast Implants

The FDA has approved silicone breast implants for breast augmentation and states that, “There is no apparent association between silicone gel-filled breast implants and connective tissue disease, breast cancer, or reproductive problems.”

Breast Augmentation with Fat Graft

Breast augmentation with fat graft is a 2-for-1 procedure: The patient gets both liposuction and larger breasts.

Fat grafting is different because the incisions at all sites are usually about ¼ inch or less in addition to fat vs implants. Liposuction of the thighs, hips, and/or abdomen provides the fat that is injected into the breasts. More than one procedure may be needed to achieve the best results possible.

The advantage over implants is that this is the patient’s own tissue. Initially the investment is made up front so that the patient won’t need to worry about the other operations in the future that will be needed with breast implants.

Recovery for Breast Fat Grafting Augmentation Procedure

Fat grafting recovery is also different than implants in that the tenderness is more at the liposuction sites as opposed to the breasts. Like implant surgery, pain medication is given to make the discomfort tolerable. Excessive motion of the arms and heavy lifting are also discouraged during the healing process. This allows for the fat to heal in the proper position. At least one week off of work is encouraged. Some are back to work sooner. Again, this is all patient dependent, as some are more resilient than others.

Either way, the end result includes larger, fuller, and more natural breasts. We find high satisfaction among fat graft breast augmentation patients.

Expectations after Breast Augmentation

After the surgery, instructions are given to guide activities and limitations. These instructions are designed to obtain the best results. By 6 weeks, usual activities can be resumed. Exercises are taught to help keep the breast implants soft.

Nipple sensation is important. The anatomic techniques used in this surgery help to protect the nerves that provide sensation to the nipples.

Mammograms are recommended at the regular scheduled times. For Silicone implants, the FDA recommends a MRI of the breasts, to detect what is known as a silent rupture, 3 years after placement of the implants and every 2 years thereafter. This is the best way to detect rupture of the implant.

Overall, the breast augmentation patient can expect satisfaction with larger and fuller breasts.
